How asymmetric a normal face is, how much of it anyone can see, and what it does and does not predict.

Verdict: works a little, for cheek fullness, and unmeasured for symmetry. The one real face yoga study, a 20-week Northwestern pilot in JAMA Dermatology, found fuller cheeks and a rated age 2.7 years younger in the 16 women who finished. It did not measure symmetry, had no control group, and most other features did not change.

Verdict: only a clinic can, and partly. Orthodontics aligns the dental midline and can remove a crossbite shift; in a growing face that can change where the jaw settles. In an adult it leaves the chin on the bone where it was. And the Washington follow-ups found about 10% of extraction cases still straight at 20 years.

Verdict: changes the look, not the face. Part on the side of the higher brow, cover the low one with a fringe, put volume opposite the fuller cheek, and never end the cut at the jawline. Measure brow height and chin offset first so you are styling against numbers, then check the two framings with the same tool.

A systematic review put numbers on it: eyelids 2 mm, mouth corners 3 mm, brows 3.5 mm, nose tip 4 mm, chin 6 mm. Below those, nobody notices. 93% of people have at least a 1 mm brow or lid difference. Measuring tells you which side of the line you are on.

A meta-analysis of 13 studies found measured asymmetry explains about 2% of attractiveness in men and nothing in women. Perfectly mirrored faces are rated worse than the originals. Symmi does not sell perfect symmetry. It tells you where your face leans and what part of that can move.

Verdict: changes the look, not the face. The same 45 faces were judged attractive 13% of the time at 50 mm and 51% at 105 mm, so the lens is the first lever. Then: frames that follow canthal tilt hide a difference, a level frame on a centred bridge beats any shape, front light equalises and side light exaggerates. Measure in flat light first.

Hunter eyes vs prey eyes, explained with numbers instead of vibes: positive canthal tilt, a narrow eye opening and a low brow on one side; rounder, more open eyes on the other. What each measurement is, why the look took over TikTok, and how to measure your own in your browser.

Jaw angle, jaw width and chin: which parts are bone, which are soft tissue, and what the trials found.

Verdict: changes the look, not the face. Gua sha moves fluid, and morning fluid is a real part of how soft a jaw reads. The effect lasts hours. No controlled trial has measured it changing the masseter, the fat pad or the mandible, and the mechanism gives no reason to expect it to.

Verdict: works, for showing the border. Fat under the chin and along the jaw is the layer that hides the edge, and it is the one that responds to what you do. Losing it reveals the mandible you have, including any asymmetry that was under the fat. It does not build a different jaw.

Verdict: only a clinic can, and it is temporary. A systematic review of 28 studies and 748 patients found masseter thickness down 26 to 31% at three months after a single-site injection; bite force recovers by six months. It shrinks the muscle. It does not move the bone, the fat or the chin. Informational only.

Verdict: changes the look, not the face. The jaw angle is the most asymmetric point on a normal face, 4.6 mm on average, and a beard replaces that outline with one you trim. Draw the neckline level rather than following the bone, fade the fuller side tighter, and keep the chin section symmetrical. Then check the outline against the jawline tool.

A PubMed search for mewing returns 31 items, almost none of them studies. The closest thing to a test, a Cochrane review of 27 randomised trials, found that real appliances worn daily by growing children moved the jaw relationship by 0.02 degrees. Tongue posture is still worth having. Just not for the reason you were sold.

Does chewing gum define your jawline? Not in the only trial that measured it: 58 people, six months, three sessions of gum a day. Bite force rose, but because tooth contact improved, not because the muscle grew. Masseter thickness and jaw morphology: no change. The hardened mastic gum sold as ten times harder has never been measured by anyone but the people selling it.

Looksmax forums keep a thread of poses that make a face photograph better: jut the jaw, smile slightly, purse the lips, chin down and camera high, squint, tape the brows, turn to your best side. We shot one example face doing each and ran every photo through five free measuring tools. Chin down moved the jaw angle 10° and the canthal tilt 2.3°, and cost three ratios their forum band. A three-quarter turn dropped the symmetry index 28 points. Jaw jutting moved the jaw angle 0.4°.

September 18, 2026 · 5 min read
Verdict: works a little, muscle layer only. Ultrasound puts the lifetime cost of one-sided chewing at about 1 mm of masseter thickness. Chewing evenly can hold that level. But the two best data sets disagree on which side of the face ends up bigger, and the largest one, 748 adults, found no effect of chewing side on facial asymmetry at all.

Can a misaligned pelvis cause facial asymmetry? Yes, in the soft tissue: a pelvic tilt shifts head position, jaw rest and muscle tone, and the side that works harder shows it in the mouth corner, brow and cheek.
