Canthal Tilt Calculator

Stop guessing from a selfie. Symmi locates the true inner and outer corners of each eye, removes head tilt, and gives you the angle in degrees for the left eye, the right eye, and the average.

How it is measured

Inner corner to outer corner, after the head is levelled.

Canthal tilt is the angle of the line from the medial canthus (inner corner) to the lateral canthus (outer corner), relative to horizontal. A raised outer corner is positive. The tool uses the landmark model's true corner points, not the eyelid crease, and rotates the whole face so that the line between the pupils is level before measuring. That removes the single biggest source of error in home measurements.

Positive
+2° and above. The outer corner sits above the inner corner. On Symmi's scale the ideal band is 0 to +5°; above that the tilt starts to read as extreme.
Neutral
Between −2° and +2°. Most faces land here.
Negative
Below −2°. The outer corner sits below the inner. Not a flaw; many actors and models have it.
Left vs right
A difference over 2° between eyes is a symmetry finding and shows up in photos more than the absolute tilt does.

FAQ

What is a good canthal tilt?+

On Symmi's landmark scale, 0 to +5° is the ideal band and +2° or more already reads as positive. The +5° to +8° figures quoted on forums come from a different method that reads about 3° higher than this scale, so compare against the band this tool gives, not a number from a forum.

Why is mine lower than I expected?+

Landmark-based measurement reads a few degrees lower than clinical calliper measurement because it uses the corner point rather than the eyelid margin. A +3° here is a healthy positive tilt.

Can canthal tilt be changed?+

The bony orbit does not move. The soft tissue around the outer corner does respond to brow and lateral-eye work, which can lift the apparent outer corner by a degree or two. The Symmi app tracks this over rescans so you see whether it moved.

Does head tilt affect it?+

Enormously. A 5° roll adds 5° to one eye and subtracts it from the other. This tool removes roll before measuring and shows you how much it removed.
